FAQs

What is CAAA?

The Camp Alleghany Alumni Association, Inc. (CAAA), formed in 2011, is a group of former campers, Green Team members, camp employees, parents and friends of camp who are interested in raising money to make capital improvements to the Camp facilities and provide scholarships to campers.  We wanted to provide a way for alumni to give back to their camp, whether or not they have a camper to send.

The mission of the newly formed organization is: To support Camp Alleghany’s mission by uniting, giving, and enriching alumni, friends, and campers through loyalty and friendship.  (We have deliberately used the word “alumni” rather than the feminine “alumnae” so that both men and women know they are welcome to join!)

How do I get involved?

From the CAAA website, click on the “Join the CAAA” button and fill out your contact information. To become a member of the CAAA, complete the payment section. Annual membership dues are $25.00 (that’s approximately the equivalent of 12 cups of Starbuck’s coffee!).  Log in as a New User and create your own password. Once you have joined, you can log back in at any time and change your contact information and password, or make another donation.

How will my membership dues (and other contributions) be used by CAAA?

Membership dues will fund capital improvements that cannot be covered by camp tuition (new Play Hall curtains? refurbishment of Junior Camp playground? some new canoes? a new popcorn machine?). CAAA members will have the opportunity to provide input on high-priority projects, but the final decision on these capital improvements will be determined by the CAAA Board of Directors

The Scholarship Committee is responsible for raising tax-deductible contributions for the sole purpose of providing scholarships to campers with an identified need for financial assistance. Through the sponsorship of the scholarship fund administered by the American Camp Association – a non-profit organization, Camp Alleghany, Inc. and CAAA will be able to solicit and use tax-deductible contributions to send needy campers to Camp Alleghany.

The criteria for scholarships is developed by the committee, and scholarship recipients will be selected by the committee. The committee is comprised of CAAA BOD members and nominees (selected by CAAA) who have relevant expertise.  Anyone interested in serving on this committee should contact the CAAA BOD president, B.A. Clark-Thomas.

Why are my membership dues not tax-deductible?

CAAA was incorporated as a for-profit organization, in order to allow CAAA to raise money and spend it on capital improvements for camp, also a for-profit corporation.  The IRS will not allow a tax-deductible contribution be given to a for-profit corporation.  However, CAAA will be accepting tax-deductible contributions to a scholarship fund being established for Camp Alleghany under the auspices of the American Camp Association.

What are the benefits of membership in CAAA?

Initially, members will be given access to a comprehensive membership directory, a subscription to the Rattler and a members-only quarterly newsletter The Lantern, and priority reservations for Family Camp. Additionally, CAAA hosts reunion events and other events and venues for alumni to stay connected with each other.

How was the current Board of Directors formed?

The initial Board of Directors was formed by a group of volunteers who expressed an interest in getting involved in the creation of CAAA.  This group recommended a Board of Directors that was comprised of representatives from a variety of Camp constituencies – including alumnae from different age groups, a camp employee, a parent or past parent and a Green Team member.  The current roster of Board members was approved by this group.  Their terms are staggered, so that new Board members can be added over time.
