Our Staff
Counselors at Camp Alleghany are women ages 18 and older, many of whom attended Alleghany as campers themselves. Alleghany encourages the return of alumnae year after year to help keep camp traditions and friendships strong, however all staff members must apply, interview, and submit to a background check annually. At the start of each summer, the staff undergoes 10 days of training and orientation. All staff members receive CPR/AED certification as well as instruction in child development and communication, in alignment with the American Camp Association's standards and expectations for counselor training.
Let me share something with you -- and this is important in the sense that the staff of any camp, though they may not like to hear it, represents the camp 24/7. Wherever you go, whatever you do, they are representing camp. Even when it comes to a nut like me.
From top to bottom, the Alleghany staff (and the campers) treated me like a bona fide rock star, and literally from the moment I got there. --- to the point that Elizabeth had to ask them to back off because the video was shaping up to be a promotional video for me!
The truth is that I do occasionally get work that I just cruise through, and simply deliver the work as requested. Then you have those other jobs that I decide are going to be special. When I walked off that barge for the last time and got in my car, after how I was treated, I actually said out loud --- "OKay, Ghany's getting the real deal". And that's a tribute to the staff. When you treat people like royalty, people want to give back a royal response.

Name: Anne Morgan Hometown: Fallston, Maryland Position: Head of Junior Camp Can't believe I will be back for my 12th summer as a 4th year Tinge! I am beyond excited to be working with Whitney also a JC from '09. This summer I am looking forward to spending my time in J camp and hopefully making a few appearances out there on the Archery Range. I'm currently a Junior at Bridgewater College where I am majoring in Athletic Training with hopes to go to graduate school for Physical Therapy. Whenever I get some free time I enjoy exercising, cooking, and watching sporting events. As a second generation 'Ghany Girl I cannot tell you how much camp has impacted my life. From my first summer leading up until this year my mom, aunt and I have continued to swap stories, secrets, and favorite pranks to play. To the life long friendships I have made, there has never been a moment of regret coming to camp. Growing up here during the summers has been the best decision I have made and I am so thankful for my mom and aunt for sharing this wonderful place with me. |

Name: Georgie Position: Assistant Head of Senior Camp/Upstart Mom Hometown: Birmingham, England. # years at camp: This will be my 4th! When I arrived at Alleghany in 2010, it was supposed to be a one-off summer of fun to celebrate graduating with a First Class Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I did not anticipate how much camp would come to mean to me in such a short amount of time, and I left with a new desire to work with young people, as well as a determination to return. I am about to finish my Master's degree in the same field, specialising in contemporary critical theory and poetry, and I work in the university's student advice centre making sure that our students get the support they need to succeed in their studies. Camp was better preparation for that job than any training programme could have been! I cannot wait to return for my FOURTH summer and to help my red hot upstarts develop into confident and inspirational leaders, while having the BEST! SUMMER! EVER! in senior camp!

This will be my eighth summer and I'm absolutely thrilled to get the opportunity to return as a counselor and get to know even more of camp's splendid array of campers and staff. Hi, Mini Camp 2013! I'm getting my trunk packed and my tie-dye ready to go! I can't wait to be back at Alleghany for my 20th summer. I'm already looking forward to my first swim in the Greenbrier River, all the crazy fun of evening activites, sleeping in the cool mountain air, yummy sweetrolls for breakfast, and being back with special friends I've known for a long time. And I know I'll make a whole bunch of new friends, too. What could be better?? I'm a teacher and a mom in Davidson, North Carolina and have been a Ghany Girl all my life. I'm now lucky enough to have a whole flock of Ghany girls in my own family--nieces and cousins and a daughter! I love to play tennis and take hikes, and my favorite activity at camp was rifle. It's going to be an amazing summer! |
