Before You Apply

Welcome to Camp Alleghany’s staff page! We thank you for your interest in working as a Ghany Counselor. Our counselors are women ages 18 and older, many of whom attended Alleghany as campers themselves.  Alleghany encourages the return of alumnae year after year to help keep camp traditions and friendships strong. We also encourage new and international applicants as a way to diversify our camp community. All staff members must apply, interview, and submit to a background check annually. Additionally, we expect all our counselors to adhere to the Honor Code, the No Gossip Policy, and the Counselor Code of Conduct while employed by Alleghany. Below you will find the application as well as useful information to help you decide which position at Alleghany will best fit your talents and personality. We hope to see you this summer!

Before You Apply

  • Look at your calendar! See when your school gets out, check with your parents about vacations, etc. All staff must attend all of Staff Training Week. This is imperative. Please read the Staff Training/Time Off Policy before sending in your application.

  • Have to leave camp for college orientation? That is fine, just talk with Elizabeth about those dates as soon as you know them. If you have a choice in when to leave, it is better to leave during the term than during Staff Training. There will be plenty of coverage for you during the term, and the materials you miss during Staff Training will be difficult to make up.

  • Want to work in the Swimming or Canoeing department? You need to be lifeguard certified! You will be paid extra by Camp Alleghany for your extra duties and responsibilities, but you must have this certification.

  • Want to work in the Rifle Department? You will need to attend Alleghany’s Rifle School, which begins on Wednesday, June 13th at 9:00 a.m.

  • Make sure you have a current and up-to-date email address that you check regularly. You will receive a lot of important information via email. It’s imperative that you have an updated account and that you check it!

  • Review the Honor Code, the Counselor Code of Conduct, and the No Gossip Policy, all found on the website, to make certain you understand the unique responsibilities of being a camp counselor. If you have any questions or concerns about these documents and your ability to uphold these responsibilities, please discuss them with Elizabeth before applying.

  • Contact Elizabeth if you have any questions about being a counselor, or any concerns at all. Before you even apply, it is better to clear the air of anything that may hinder you from being the best counselor you can be.
